We are deeply concerned by President Trump’s decision to fire the Archivist of the United States, Dr. Colleen Shogan, and the subsequent appointment of Jim Byron, a political ally, to oversee the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) under the direction of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. These actions, combined with the resignation of senior NARA leadership, pose a serious threat to the integrity, independence, and fundamental mission of the National Archives.

STATEMENT: Trump Freezes All Grant Funding to Libraries, Archives, and Museums

Trump has demanded a freeze on all federal grants and for all agencies to “temporarily pause all activities related to obligations or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance.”  The memo also calls for each agency to perform a “comprehensive analysis” to ensure its grant and loan programs are consistent with President Donald Trump’s executive orders, which aimed to ban federal diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and limit clean energy spending.
