NH House Finance Committee to Vote on Amendment to CUT the State Library Budget
EveryLibrary Urges Immediate Public Response to Stop Dangerous Defunding Effort
The New Hampshire House Finance Committee is set to vote on Tuesday, March 25, on a surprise amendment (2025-1300h) to the state budget that would completely eliminate funding for the New Hampshire State Library.
EveryLibrary, the national political action committee for libraries, stands with local library stakeholders across the Granite State to ask the public to immediately contact their Representatives to oppose this harmful and politically motivated amendment!
We made it easy to Email your Representative today and tell them to vote NO on any amendment that defunds the State Library.
The amendment, #2025-1300h, was introduced without prior public discussion or stakeholder input and threatens to dismantle the foundational support system for every local library in the state. Without the New Hampshire State Library, communities—especially small towns and rural areas—would lose access to essential services, professional development, interlibrary loan networks, and technical support that enable local libraries to function effectively.
“No one asked for this Amendment to the budget. It came out of nowhere. And if passed, it would create chaos for local libraries, especially in small towns and rural areas,” said John Chrastka, Executive Director of EveryLibrary. “This isn’t policy—it’s politics. And it will hurt real people across the state.”
