The First Amendment is rightly associated with free speech in libraries, but its scope goes beyond just the freedom to read. It also protects the rights of citizens to peacefully assemble and petition the government, both of which are core components of our democratic society. Our hope, when we launched Fight for the First, was to support not only free speech rights in libraries but also the broader scope of the First Amendment, especially how citizens engage library boards and school boards in our democratic republic.

In 2023, EveryLibrary continued to uphold our decade long commitment to libraries and librarians. Since its inception in 2012, EveryLibrary has been dedicated to securing better funding and policies for libraries, with notable achievements such as the launch of the Save School Librarians initiative in 2017. This year, EveryLibrary took bold steps to address the ongoing book ban crisis and solidify its position as a leader in library advocacy.

The Top Five Must-Read Stories about Librarians from 2023

Most articles and publications from library organizations are designed to speak to librarians. While there is value in librarians talking to each other, our Medium articles are designed to do something that no one else in libraries is doing: we are talking to Americans about libraries. Our donors have helped us to do that -- and we allow and encourage libraries across the country to repurpose our content to help build local support by affixing a Creative Commons License to the end of each story we publish. EveryLibrary has published 703 stories on Medium since 2017, with 212 articles published this year alone at a rate of three stories every week.
