EveryLibrary in the News 2025 - January to May

From January through May 2025, EveryLibrary was repeatedly cited by national, state, and local media as libraries faced an escalating wave of book bans, legislative attacks, executive overreach, and coordinated efforts to defund public institutions. This coverage reflects EveryLibrary’s role as the only national political action committee for libraries, showing up in courtrooms, statehouses, federal policy debates, elections, and grassroots campaigns to defend the freedom to read, protect library workers, and mobilize voters when libraries face direct political threat.

Read-In on June 27th Calls for Restoration of School Librarians in all Philadelphia Schools

On Friday, June 27, from 1:00 to 1:45 PM, community members will gather for a silent “Read-In” on the steps of the School District of Philadelphia Administration Building (440 N. Broad Street) to advocate for the return of certified school librarians in every district-operated school. Organized by the Philadelphia Alliance to Restore School Librarians (PARSL), the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (PSLA), and EveryLibrary, the event is a public show of support for student literacy, digital media literacy, and the joy of reading without protest signs or chants, just books.

STATEMENT: Rejecting Government Speech Doctrine in Public Libraries in Little v. Llano County

On May 24, 2025, in a sharply divided 10–7 decision, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the government can restrict access to books in public libraries simply because it dislikes or disagrees with the content of those books.

The Advocacy Partnership that Defeated Two Bad Alabama Bills

HB4 and SB6, two severe anti-library bills in the nation, are dead. The 2025 legislative session ended recently without them becoming law. HB4, the so-called “Jail the Librarians Act,” never made it out of committee.

The passage of HB 324 by the New Hampshire state Senate is a deeply disappointing moment for everyone who values the constitutional rights of students, the professional judgment of educators and librarians, and the long-standing tradition of local control in Granite State schools. EveryLibrary strongly urges Governor Kelly Ayotte to veto HB 324 and stand with the overwhelming majority of New Hampshire voters who oppose this type of government overreach.
