Winning Against Book Bans in Douglas County, CO

We were proud to support the Douglas County Freadom Defenders in their win against book bans.

Their campaign was so successful that LGBTQ Nation recently published an article about their victory.

We were able to support the Douglas County Freadom Defenders' work through our FightForTheFirst.org platform, which gives local community members and parents the tools they need to start organizing and fighting back. We also support these pro-library campaigns with up to $1,000 in digital ads to help them reach more people, and we provide pro bono training and consulting and access to other tools.

We launched FightForTheFirst.org in March of 2023 in order to support grassroots groups at scale in a way that no other organization does. Since its launch, we've worked with nearly 70 pro-library groups working to fight book bans or protect library funding. Whether it is for a public library like Douglas County, CO., or a school district facing censorship, Fight for the First is an effective digital platform for organizers.

While petitions alone may not change a board member’s mind, petitions quickly generate a list of supporters that organizers can rally to attend meetings and vote for pro-library candidates and policies. That list of people who care is the true foundational power of organizing since library board meetings rarely draw in large crowds under normal circumstances.

If you are facing book bans in your school or public library, launch a campaign today on fightforthefirst.org and we'll support you every step of the way.
