In Conversation with PEN America about Book Bans in Schools - Tuesday, Sept 24 at 12n EDT / 9am PDT

Join EveryLibrary's executive director, John Chrastka, for an insightful discussion with Kasey Meehan, the author of PEN America’s latest memo on the dramatic surge in school book bans across the U.S. during the 2023-2024 school year. PEN America's preliminary findings reveal that over 10,000 books were banned in public schools during the 2023-2024 school year—nearly three times the number from the previous year. The surge in bans is driven by new state laws and organized censorship campaigns, with Florida and Iowa leading the effort. Many of the banned books feature LGBTQ+ themes, characters of color, or explore topics such as sexual abuse and racism. We’ll dive into the findings, the impact on student access to literature, and what lies ahead in the fight for the freedom to read.
