Thought into Action – Why I Gave to EveryLibrary
When I was President of the California Library Association (and in the few years leading up to that gig), one of the things that I learned from attending library legislative days both in Sacramento and Washington, DC was that until libraries could bring money to the table, we'd continue to be a nice, nostalgic, heart-warming, greater good and woefully underfunded service for most, if not all politicians.
When I was President of the California Library Association (and in the few years leading up to that gig), one of the things that I learned from attending library legislative days both in Sacramento and Washington, DC was that until libraries could bring money to the table, we'd continue to be a nice, nostalgic, heart-warming, greater good and woefully underfunded service for most, if not all politicians.
When asked by a librarian in our group in Sacramento why prison guards were receiving so much money from the State and were not facing cuts that were originally threatened, one staffer of a library-loving legislator replied that they have money, we don't. Until we can get unions or other supporters backing us financially - or raise it ourselves to have a consistent revenue stream - we'll have a tough go. It was an eye-opening moment, and one that has made me talk about the idea of a PAC in CA ever since.
Of course, EveryLibrary has turned thought into action, and I appreciate and support your efforts.
