We Are Stronger Than Censorship Panel 1 Featuring Phillip D. Cortez, Sheila Modir and Jeffrey Kashou - Monday, Sept 23 at 2pm ET / 11am PT

We Are Stronger Than Censorship: A Celebration of Books and Stories

The goal of the We Are Stronger Than Censorship program is that for every book banned or challenged between September 1 and September 30, 2024, two or more books will be donated – turning negativity and fear into positivity and love... in the form of books! The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) and EveryLibrary Institute have teamed up to spread light and inclusive books to readers in communities across the US impacted by efforts to restrict the availability of books featuring Black, Queer, and other under-represented characters and themes.

Today, we’re thrilled to have three distinguished panelists who are passionate about literature, diversity, and mental health:

Phillip D. Cortez is the author of the picture book I'll Be the Moon (Illustrated by Mafs Rodriguez Alpide, The Collective Book Studio). Phillip is a devoted author and storyteller who has captured the imaginations of young readers with his books Night Rhythms and When I Close My Eyes. Phillip’s dedication to storytelling is deeply rooted in his love for reading and his family. Learn more about him and his work in his insightful interview with Foreword: Meet Phillip D. Cortez.

Dr. Sheila Modir and Dr. Jeffrey Kashou are the authors of The Proudest Color (Illustrated by Monica Mikai, Familius). Together they bring a wealth of expertise in diversity, equity, and mental health. Dr. Modir, a pediatric psychologist, has extensive experience in addressing racial trauma and resilience, while Dr. Kashou, a licensed marriage and family therapist, focuses on clinical product design and mental health advocacy. Together, they work tirelessly to ensure responsible portrayals of mental health and advocate for better policies and practices. They’re also known for their work with film and television productions, including consulting for Disney and Freeform.

We hope today’s discussion inspires you to value and promote the inclusivity and diversity that books and stories bring into our lives. Let’s turn challenges into opportunities and continue to spread light through the stories we cherish.
