Statement on the Senate Book Ban Bill
Politicians shouldn't decide what your children are allowed to read.
EveryLibrary strongly opposes S. 4925, legislation that we believe would accelerate book banning in America's schools and undermine every student's right to read.

For generations, school libraries have empowered young people to explore ideas, ask questions, and discover perspectives that help them grow into informed citizens. S. 4925 threatens that mission by creating powerful incentives for schools to remove books and educational materials rather than risk losing federal funding. When fear becomes the standard for building school library collections, students lose access to knowledge, history, literature, and the diverse voices that define our nation.

School librarians are trained professionals who work with educators, parents, and local communities to build collections that support learning and meet the needs of students. Congress should be investing in literacy, supporting school librarians, and expanding educational opportunity, not advancing legislation that could chill access to books and encourage censorship.
EveryLibrary rejects the idea that politicians in Washington should have greater influence over what students can read than the educators, librarians, families, and local communities who know them best.
The right to read is not a partisan value. It is an American value. Students deserve the opportunity to encounter new ideas, think critically, and make informed decisions for themselves. Removing books because they address difficult topics or reflect the experiences of different communities does not prepare young people for citizenship. It limits their education.

We call on the United States Senate to reject S. 4925 and stand with students, educators, school librarians, authors, publishers, and millions of Americans who believe that the answer to a book you dislike is not government censorship.
