Election Day 2026 with EveryLibrary: Tracking Library Votes Across the Country

Over 90% of funding for public libraries comes from the local tax base. That’s why we founded EveryLibrary as a political action committee and have dedicated the past 14 years to working with libraries on local ballots. Today, we are proud to be directly supporting 13 local library campaigns, including one that is facing a defunding campaign, along with the statewide Keep Libraries Funded campaign opposing Florida Amendment 3, all the while tracking another 60 that are asking voters for new or renewed support.

Tonight we will be live posting on BluSky, X, Instagram, and Facebook the results of local library levies, millages, referenda, parcel taxes, and bonds. Our campaigns are:

  • Grand County Library, Colorado - Renew the local levy and restore the tax rate.
  • Palm Beach County Library, Florida - Issue a bond to build a wonderful new library.
  • Bourbonnais Public Library, Illinois - Increase operating revenue for staff, collections, programs, and services by referendum.
  • Bartlett Public Library District, Illinois - Two bond measures, one to remodel a building and another to build a new library for the next generation.
  • Berkeley Public Library, Illinois - Issue a bond to repair and renovate their library.
  • Fondulac Public Library, Illinois - Raise new revenue for operations by referendum.
  • O’Fallon Public Library, Illinois - Building a new library through a public-private partnership.
  • Hancock Area Library District, Michigan - Establish a permanent tax rate for their city and three townships to fund library operations.
  • Las Cruces Public Libraries, New Mexico - Renovate and expand the  Branigan Library with a bond.
  • St. Clairsville Public Library, Ohio - Renew their local option tax for another seven years of stable operations.
  • Independence Public Library, Oregon - Establish a new Community Service Fee for parks and libraries after the 2024 library levy failed.
  • Timberland Regional Library, Washington - Stabilize funding for this five-county library system through a levy lid lift.

The Saline County Library in Arkansas is facing a defunding fight. If their measure passes, the budget will be cut by 50%. We have been on the ground with the local Vote No committee since their initial Fight for the First campaign opposing censorship and book bans almost 2 years ago. The censors didn’t prevail, and now they are taking their anti-access efforts to the library’s funding.

For several months, we have helped dozens of Florida library foundations and Friends groups organize the Keep Libraries Funded Campaign to oppose Amendment 3, a state Constitutional change to property taxes that would essentially defund local cities and counties, including libraries up and down the state. If Amendment 3 passes, Florida libraries and the rest of local government will face tremendous funding shortfalls. With the coordinated efforts of these local library support organizations, we have sent out tens of thousands of emails and texts to potential “No voters” and delivered over 1.5 million ad impressions to build awareness and ask people to pledge to vote no. This work will continue after Election Day, pass or fail.

We are paying particular attention to several other local and statewide ballot initiatives, particularly libraries we have worked with before, like Pueblo City-County Library (CO), Lyons Township (MI), East Palo Alta (CA), and Garland County (AR). In New Mexico, the biennial GoBond for Libraries would provide $19 million in state aid to public, tribal, school, and academic libraries. In Wyoming, Proposition 1 is a different story. Like Florida Amendment 3 it would cut property taxes deeply and harm library services across all 23 counties.

Please follow along with our live posting on social media tonight on your favorite channel. We are on Facebook @everylibrary, on Instagram @_everylibrary_, on BluSky @everylibrary.bsky.social, and Twitter @everylibrary, too.

All of our work assisting local libraries in developing their information-only campaigns and our support for local Vote Yes - and Vote No - campaigns is always done pro bono and for free. We can only do this work because of our donors. Win or lose today, we have been there for these libraries because we believe that each and every one of them matters in their communities and for their neighbors. Dozens of libraries are scheduled to be on the ballot, and we are the only national organization set up to do this inherently political work. If you believe that this is important, please make a donation today so we can continue this work in 2027 and beyond.
