The Our Library, Our Community committee in Cedar Rapids (IA) has received enough signatures to get a measure on the November 3 ballot.
The 27 cents per $1,000 of taxable valuation increase will go toward operations costs for the city’s new downtown library and west-side branch. It is expected to generate $1.6 million per year. The committee is quickly transitioning to focus on the Vote YES campaign.
Residents in Spanish Fork (UT) will vote on a bond for a new center that includes a library this November. The City Council voted 4-1 to place the $39 million bond on the ballot. The center will include a recreation and aquatic center, senior center and library.
Escondido Public Library (CA) is considering a general obligation bond measure on the November 2016 ballot. The bond would pay for a renovation and expansion of the downtown library and an exact amount has not been determined yet. The City Council will wait on a decision to add it to the ballot until after pre-polling is done.
A story that we put some muscle behind in 2013 with the Rapid Response fund is still making the listicles. Councilman Toups and his racist rant that kicked off the worst library election in the country is back in the news thanks to Trump. The brigade of pissed off librarians didn’t make it into a link from the story. So, here it is again.

EveryLibrary Executive Director, John Chrastka, will be giving the closing keynote of the Southeast Florida Library Information Network (SEFLIN) Conference. The September 18 virtual conference theme is outreach, marketing, & advocacy. Registration is still open and is free for Florida library staff.
Ed Garcia, director of the Cranston (RI) Public Library joined the EveryLibrary Advisory Committee yesterday. We are ecstatic to have him join us after his experience with a successful campaign in 2014 to secure a $6 million bond for library renovations. More details on our blog. Welcome aboard Ed!
