Join Becky Spatford from RA for All for a compelling panel featuring acclaimed authors Kiese Laymon and Gabino Iglesias as they discuss their latest works and the profound themes they tackle in their writing.
Kiese Laymon, the Ottilie Schillig Professor in English and Creative Writing at the University of Mississippi, is renowned for his memoir Heavy: An American Memoir. Selected as one of the best books of the 21st century by The New York Times, Heavy offers a raw and introspective look at Laymon’s struggles with identity, trauma, and the complexities of his family relationships. His candid exploration of his experiences growing up in Jackson, Mississippi, and his reflections on American societal issues make this memoir both a critical and a personal touchstone.
Gabino Iglesias, his Shirley Jackson and Bram Stoker award-winning novel, The Devil Takes You Home, and his evocative new novel House of Bone and Rain, called "stunningly visceral" by the New York Times Book Review. This work intertwines myth and reality in a gripping tale of vengeance set in a Puerto Rican slum. Through the story of a group of friends driven by grief and revenge, Iglesias delves into themes of violence, mysticism, and the supernatural, offering a hauntingly powerful narrative that blurs the lines between the seen and unseen.
In this panel, Laymon and Iglesias will explore their approaches to writing about trauma and societal issues, the interplay between personal experience and fictional storytelling, and the ways in which their narratives challenge and illuminate the human condition. Don't miss this chance to engage with two significant voices in contemporary literature.
