Governor Lombardo Should Sign AB416 for All Nevadans' Right to Read
Nevada Governor Lombardo should sign AB 416 to prevent unconstitutional censorship in public libraries and schools.
Nevada has an opportunity to take the lead in defending intellectual freedom and protecting our schools and libraries from harmful censorship. Assembly Bill 416 (AB 416) is currently on Governor Lombardo’s desk, and he needs to hear from every Nevadan who believes in a fundamental right to read.
This bipartisan bill aims to keep politics out of our bookshelves.
In Nevada and throughout America, an author's or reader's identity should never be a reason for banning books. Our democracy is founded on the principle that everyone has the right to access ideas, regardless of who writes or reads them. When the government or vocal political factions attempt to determine which voices are welcome in the library, they cross a line that is not only wrong but unconstitutional.
AB 416 also embodies a principle that people of all political perspectives can appreciate: it places the power to decide on book challenges in the hands of the courts, rather than political or ideological committees. This ensures that no individual or group can ban a book simply because they disagree with its content. This is a critical safeguard for liberty and a necessary protection against the rising threat of ideological censorship.
Now is the time to take action. Governor Lombardo has the chance to sign AB 416 into law and position Nevada as a leader in defending the First Amendment and protecting intellectual freedom. We urge every supporter of libraries, every parent, every educator, and every freedom-loving Nevadan to speak up now.
