A rising tide of executive orders—and the sweeping agenda Project 2025
Is already eroding the foundations of our nation’s libraries. These moves target the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and diversity initiatives, while the repeal of critical museum infrastructure funding signals a broader push to undermine the access to free information. In Texas, a dozen pre-filed bills threaten to restrict library materials and undermine intellectual freedom, paving the way for greater control over access to information.
If we fail to act, these attacks will only intensify.
Communities across the country could lose their most vital resource: spaces for learning, exploration, and cultural exchange. The threat of further censorship looms large, putting intellectual freedom—and the right to read—in jeopardy.
Despite these challenges, there is a way forward.
EveryLibrary is committed to defending libraries on every front:
-
Introducing Right to Read legislation
-
Supporting local advocates to defeat library privatization
- Fighting to secure funding of the Ste. Genevieve County Library, Missouri, and five other libraries facing critical spring ballot measures.
-
Forming the North Dakota Right to Read Coalition , a proactive, pro-library group dedicated to safeguarding intellectual freedom before harmful bills can take root.
-
Our work has never been more essential. By uniting in defense of libraries, we protect not just books on shelves, but the fundamental freedoms that define our democracy. Your donation fuels these vital efforts—from introducing legislation that ensures free access to information, to stopping efforts that threaten to close library doors.
Donate today.
Stand with libraries and help preserve the right to read, learn, and explore without fear of censorship or loss of critical resources. Together, we can push back and ensure libraries remain a beacon of knowledge and opportunity for everyone.
