I Believe in Libraries.

Next week is National Banned Books Week and this is a good time to reflect on why I founded EveryLibrary and why I believe that libraries and your right to read are worth fighting for.

Restore the Right to Read at DoDEA Schools

EveryLibrary strongly supports the introduction of H.R.5527, new legislation by Congressman Jamie Raskin (Ranking Member, House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government) and Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan (Ranking Member, House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel and Readiness). Today, we are hoping to share how our organizations are extending our advocacy, research, and policy expertise to meet the urgent needs of academic libraries and the professionals who support higher education and scholarship.

Florida Right to Read Decision is a Positive Far Beyond the State

EveryLibrary celebrates the decision last week by U.S. District Court Judge Carlos E. Mendoza in the case of Penguin Random House LLC v. Gibson, which reaffirms the First Amendment and the fundamental right to read. Judge Mendoza struck down significant portions of Florida House Bill 1069, finding that its vague and overly broad prohibitions on books that “describe sexual conduct” violated the Constitution. In his opinion, he noted that the law allowed parents to object under an “I know it when I see it” standard, forcing educators and librarians to guess what might be deemed “unsuitable,” thereby chilling access to entire collections.

STATEMENT: They’re Trying to Erase Our History from the Gift Shop

The fight over books has left the library: National Park Service gift shops. And make no mistake — this isn’t about souvenirs. It’s about censorship.
